Diesel needs a FOSTER o

r FOREVER home!

Diesel is an 8 year old purebred german shepherd.  If you are looking for a BIG guy, who is a wonderful, classic example of the best of this breed, Diesel is your guy.

Diesel is being surrendered by his family because they feel they cannot give him the attention and exercise that he needs.  He was acquired 8 years ago by their son, who purchased him with his graduation money.  The son has long since moved out of the house, and Mom and Dad (although they love Diesel dearly) just do not have the time to devote to Diesel, with full time jobs and running a home business.  They feel Diesel deserves better.

This guy is so stunning!  And he has great manners.  At 8 years old, is experiencing no problems with his hips.  He can still go on long walks.  He knows basic commands.  He currently lives with a small beagle mix dog.  Although the small dog doesn't particularly care for Diesel, Diesel does fine with the beagle.  He gets along well with other dogs, but can be somewhat dominant.  This is usually worked with no incident.  He has never lived with cats.

Diesel does suffer from occasional seizures.  He has had these his whole life, and is on daily medication to prevent them.  His seizures are unpredictable, and last about 1-2 minutes.  He may have one for two months in a row, then go a year without one.  So they are not frequent.  While in a seizure, he just needs to be comforted, and he comes out of it himself, and returns to normal.  In spite of these siezures, he is in very good health.

Can you offer a loving home to this special needs guy?  You won't be sorry!!!!!

UPDATE FROM DIESEL'S ADOPTIVE HOME, JULY 26TH, 2011:

Diesel, adopted in late December of 2009, celebrated his 9th birthday in
early June of this year (2011). He enjoys his retirement home, is very
comfortable and relaxed in his new home, and is very loved. He has learned
A LOT! He really likes being invited onto the bed with us in the morning
for cuddles while we drink our cups of coffee. He has been with us for 19
months. During that time, despite being on seizure control medications, he
has had 17 seizures. That's no big deal for us; we have figured out the
routine to keep him safe. He likes to make sure that my purse is where it
belongs on the shelf because when it moves he knows that I will be heading
out the door. He loves me more than beef steak! Really! He is a great
constant companion but has learned to stay out of the way when I'm working
on projects (working with rocks, etc.). He has been a gentleman when
visiting the off-leash park, although he is not really interested in play.
Perhaps someday he can help us welcome a younger German Shepherd, but
Diesel is well, happy, content, and—as I said—very loved.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
